Agriculture and climate change: A two way relationship.
Climate change affects agriculture and agriculture contributes to climate
change. is a severe threat to both food production and human health Climate
change is a serious threat to all aspects of agriculture including
production, distribution, food accessibility and food prices.
It influences agriculture through increased temperature, precipitation
variability and amplified intensity of weather extremes.
Climate change affects agriculture directly through altering the
agroecological conditions and indirectly by increasing demand of
agricultural production.
We refuse to believe the only future for food production is an agricultural
system that destroys the planet and keeps farmers trapped in poverty.
We promote the use of agroecology with the aim of:
• Increasing farming and food production that values people and planet
• Offering a long-term, sustainable alternative to intensive agriculture
• Transforming the lives of millions of farming families struggling to adapt to a changing climate
We’re making agriculture work better for smallholder farmers,
many of them women, so they can adapt to climate change and achieve a
good standard of living.
The effects of climate change are everywhere — in stronger
storms and drier droughts. To avoid the worst impacts of climate change,
we must limit the world’s temperature rise as quickly as possible, which
means dramatically cutting greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels and
other sources. READSL is working with partners across the public and private
sectors, to use the power of markets and technology to drive down pollution
quickly and affordably — and to shift Sierra Leone to clean energy as fast
as possible.
Our Strategic plan for renewable energy spearheads the work of promoting a just
and equitable phase-out of fossil fuels and expansion of renewables to achieve
100% renewable energy systems in Sierra Leone. If we are to avoid catastrophic
climate change, we must transform our energy system from one that burns fossil
fuels to one that is powered by 100% clean energy. To achieve this, emphasis will
be on the promotion of clean energy efficiency – Improved cook stoves and
manufacturing and distribution of Briquettes
READSL monitors the impacts of climate change on nature and
guides farmers on the conservation and restoration of ecosystems to help
mitigate and adapt to it.
Our ambition is to support GoSL in achieving the set climate resilience
action plans through ambitious measures to mitigate climate change, and
enables effective adaptation. We work to achieve this by monitoring the
impacts of climate change and responses to it, helping government implement
effective Nature-based Solutions at scale, and ensuring that responses to
climate change and its impacts are informed by evidence. We guide climate
policy and action that is equitable and inclusive to bring the greatest
benefits to farmers and country in general.
The grave threat posed by climate change necessitates swift response. In the struggle against this
global issue, READSL has focused key attention on climate change to emerge
as significant change agent amongst like-minded Climate change NGOs.
READSL is working relentlessly in Sierra Leone, a nation that is extremely
sensitive to the effects of climate change, to increase awareness, influence
legislative changes, and implement sustainable solutions that open the door
for a greener and more sustainable future.
This organisation is setting the bar when it comes to rallying communities,
putting awareness into practise, and encouraging constructive change in the
face of climate dangers. The public has to be informed about the causes and
impacts of climate change, and READSL is vital for this. We raise public
awareness of the gravity of the climate catastrophe through focused
campaigns, educational efforts, and advocacy projects.
READSL:
i. Enables people, communities, and decision-makers to
make well-informed decisions that reduce climate change and help them adapt
to its effects by spreading information and fostering climate literacy.
ii. Will go beyond awareness-building and translate
knowledge into action. The organization is actively engage with local
communities, policymakers, and businesses to drive sustainable solutions.
Through innovative projects.
iii. Will demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of
adopting renewable energy, promoting energy efficiency, and embracing
sustainable practices. This is achieved by championing initiatives such as
solar power installations, waste management programs, reforestation drives,
and climate-smart agriculture, with tangible examples of sustainable
development created.
iv. Will continue to explore innovative projects,
community-driven initiatives, and policy advocacy efforts.
v. Will support grassroots organizations empowering
vulnerable communities to national-level NGOs driving systemic change.
We will uncover the diverse approaches and impactful outcomes of their
work. By telling these stories, we intend to inspire others to band
together and take action to stop the climate calamity.
Raising Awareness and Building Climate Literacy: Climate change NGOs
in Sierra Leone like READSL are actively involved in raising awareness and
building climate literacy among individuals and communities. They carry out
educational initiatives, seminars, and awareness campaigns to inform people
about the causes and impacts of climate change. By disseminating scientific
information and promoting climate literacy, these NGOs empower individuals
to understand the urgency of the climate crisis and take informed actions
to mitigate its impacts. Through public outreach initiatives, they engage
with schools, colleges, and local communities to foster a culture of climate
awareness and environmental responsibility.
Empowering Vulnerable Communities: Climate change disproportionately
affects vulnerable communities, including those living in poverty and
marginalized areas. READSL will actively work to empower these communities
by building their resilience and supporting sustainable livelihoods. We will
provide training on climate-smart agriculture, promote sustainable water
management practices, and facilitate access to clean energy solutions. By
empowering vulnerable communities, these NGOs help reduce their
vulnerability to climate impacts and enhance their adaptive capacity.
The world is transitioning into a greener economy and a more sustainable society. In line with the National Medium-term Development Plan 2019-2023 and the Education Sector Plan- 2022-2026, Sierra Leone needs intensive capacity building to address the gaps in medium-level manpower that strengthen critical thinking & creativity, and problem-solving. READSL will align green skills training to enable our graduates access to Higher Education. We also plan to create Innovation hubs in partnership with Higher Education Institutions, private industries, and local communities for sharing resources and capacities relevant to curriculum review and faculty development.
Education plays a decisive role in promoting active engagement towards much more sustainable practices and lifestyles and represents the first step to building a more sustainable society. READSL aims to help students develop and acquire green skills to be able to face the real-world challenges of the future.
The courses we offer at READSL will clarify our action to promote green skills of our students: environmental awareness, culture for innovation, renewable energy, entrepreneurship, and active communication skills. Participants will realize how education can play a key role in promoting green skills and in increasing people’s awareness about sustainability.
They will learn how to incorporate green skills with design thinking, a problem-solving process that seeks to identify issues and find solutions by focusing on the people and communities it is intended to benefit. Participants will also learn practical strategies to help them prepare for their future.
READ-Sierra Leone intends to improve livelihood security of target groups and beneficiaries by introducing them to sustainable alternatives of income generation to subsistence farming. We train individuals on new and improved agricultural practices to increase agricultural yield as well as diversify their agricultural yield. In an attempt to strengthen and increase income levels; we train people in business management skills, entrepreneurship, strengthen existing and establish credit groups and unions.
